Jillian Tamaki: threads & text

From one very clever illustrator to another. This time with thread thrown in! Brooklyn-based illustrator and comics artist Jillian Tamaki was commissioned by Penguin to embroider three covers for Penguin Classics series. They are so joyous. I love it when an artist tackles a new medium – one that would seemingly be at odds with the other – and renews it. Those stitches are like the softest texta!

Jillian first attempted embroidery with her monster quilt (below): pretty impressive! For me, I’ve always loved the patchwork part of quilting and hated the actual embroidery, but this has got me thinking differently…

Check out Jillian’s sketchblog or her illustration site for more. HF.
