Global textiles day five: Finland

What Finnish printed textiles lack in ancient tradition, they make up for in twentieth century iconic-ness.

Marimekko, Finland’s most famous textile firm, was founded in 1951 and has produced some of the most recognisable designs of the last sixty years. They not only come up with great designs, but also apply them to a range of products including fashion, furniture, ceramics and wallpaper.

My mum used to wear an ankle-length, yellow striped Marimekko t-shirt dress when I was little – it’s still one of the coolest things I can think of. HF.
