Cymbidium & jasmine

It was an impromptu Wednesday wedding. Held on a sandstone escarpment overlooking the Pacific Ocean. The bride wore Marni. And we had the honour of making the bouquets and boutonnieres for the bridal party.

The bride requested cymbidium orchids, preferably in soft browns, pinks and creams.

We headed off to the flower markets at 5.45am that morning (without the usual thermos coffee – there were no beans left!) and as soon as we arrived we were struck by the heavenly ranunculas (see previous post). As we’re learning, it’s very rarely the flowers you’re instructed to use that end up being the most exciting at the markets. We tell ourselves its good experience for us to work within limits, but then we usually end up buying the exciting stuff anyway and either working it into the gig, or putting it on our desks/bedside tables. So. The orchids were also good; the prettiest were the mini cymbidiums in soft white.

We chose the palest pink ranunculas, laced with crimson and similarly hued roses, some yet-to-be-identified red berries and dark brown and red foliage.

Once we’d made a side trip to get Adriano Zumbo pastries, some coffee beans and a bough of jasmine from the council tennis court gardens (they had heaps, I swear) it was down to work: the wiring of the orchids and the drinking of the much-needed coffee. Nina bravely took on the all-cymbidium bridal bouquet whilst I got to play with the other stuff. All in the sun on a very lovely Spring Sydney morning. Heaven.
